There are some Christmas gifts that are always a winner. The older I get, the more I realise that there’s a reason that some gifts are classics. And no I don’t mean those annual fake-smile-while-opening kind of classics from your distant relatives (Boots toiletry gift sets..I’m looking at you). I mean the things that you actually do find yourself hoping are under your tree every year. It’s probably a sign I’m getting old that I’ve found that things I might have once thought were lame present ideas are actually now just what I want (Matching PJ sets? Check. Bath oils? Check. Candles? Yes please!) but if there’s one thing that is an absolute failsafe Christmas gift, it’s got to be perfume. It’s one of those things that I’ll always be happy to unwrap on Christmas Day! It might seem like an “obvious” gift idea, but I can bet that pretty much any girl (and probably guy too) will always be happy to receive it. I mean, can you ever really have enough perfume? It always feels like a bit of a treat and you’re always going to run out. If you ask me, it’s the perfect thing to stock up on at Christmas time, plus getting it as a gift lets you try out a new fragrance without the fear of splurging on something new and finding you don’t like it as much as your regular spritz! For me, it’s the ultimate Christmas classic to unwrap.
So of course I was up for it when Fragrance Direct asked me to choose a new fragrance for myself and one to gift someone else for Christmas this year! I’ve been quite good at trying out new perfumes recently, which is quite unusual for me. I used to end up just re-buying my favourites or asking for the same one for Christmas each year, so I’ve been trying to branch out. There’s sooo much choice on the Fragrance Direct site so it was the perfect opportunity to try something new, and find something new for my Mum’s Christmas prezzie too! The amount of choice can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are looking for a new scent and don’t know exactly what you want, but luckily they’ve created a special Christmas Gift Guide where you can browse bestsellers, newbies and gift sets for Him, Her and for Couples. The only bad thing about buying fragrances online is not being able to smell them first! If you’re buying for the first time, it can be a bit of a worry but I have to say that Fragrance Direct’s descriptions are super clear and helpful when trying to decide what fragrance you’ll like. My top tip is to look at the fragrances you already know you like, check out their key ingredients and scent notes, and then see which others feature the elements you like and might be to your taste too! I find that you can often get better bargains online for perfume, and Fragrance Direct is no exception (fyi right now if you spend £20 or more you can get 10% off with code FLASHTEN), so if I’m really stuck I’ll actually pop into a store whenever I can and test the perfumes I think I might like before buying online! It might sound silly, but especially when Christmas shopping it’s always good to get a bargain or offer when you can! Perfumes can be pretty expensive so if you can find them when they’re on offer, it’s only a good thing in my book!
Chloe Eau de Parfum
For my Christmas present to myself (come on, we all do it…) I chose the Chloe Eau de Perfume. I’d never actually tried it before, although I have got ‘Love Story’. To be honest, I usually go for a deeper, darker, more oriental scent but I knew that this Chloe fragrance would be delicious…because come on, it’s Chloe! I love the fresh floral fragrance of it, and I’m a sucker for anything rose scented so it turned out to be right up my street and perfect for when I feel like mixing up my signature scent! Its floral top-notes of peony, rose, freesia, magnolia and lily of the valley are balanced out with a warmer amber and cedar wood base, so it’s the best of both worlds when it comes to the scents that I like. It’s the kind of smell that I end up wanting my whole house to smell of as soon as I spray it because it’s so yummy! The cute bottle and packaging definitely helps too…it’s got to be my most instagrammable perfume for sure! The great thing about this scent is that it’s really versatile – chic, classic and feminine. It would work for day or night, any season, and it kind of has a timeless, ageless-ness about it. I could easily give this as s gift to someone younger or older than me and I’m pretty sure they would all love it! I could have easily given this one as my gift instead of keeping it for myself, in fact originally I did think it might be that way round until I smelt both the scents. Definitely a failsafe fragrance gift if you’re worrying about what to get someone and afraid of buying online! It’s the kind of scent that I’m sure from now on will be a staple in my collection because it just works with anything!
Calvin Klein Obsessed
The other fragrance I chose was Obsessed by Calvin Klein. I had zero idea about this scent when I ordered it, and chose it purely on the site description! I’ve owned a few CK fragrances in the past (Euphoria was my go-to for years!) but apart from that I hadn’t heard (or smelt!) anything about this one before. It’s a rework of the classic nineties ‘Obsession’. This one’s woody rather than floral, and sounded like it would be more in-tune with my oriental-scented preferences! It’s a ‘green oriental’ with top notes of citrus, white lavender and violet at its heart and amber and musk at the base. It’s seriously gorgeous smelling. Classy, clean and elegant. I really love the scent, but as soon as I smelt it, I knew it should be worn by my Mum! One of the amazing things about perfume is it’s ability to evoke a certain person, mood, time or place and that’s what I love about it…and what I love about having different perfumes for different occasions, seasons or experiences because one whiff of the smell takes you back! And that’s what I had this time. So as soon as I tried this scent, I just new it was the one I wanted to gift! It’s a really delicious fragrance, definitely a great choice if you’re looking for an evening perfume that smells expensive and tasteful. One sniff of it honestly reminds me of being little and my Mum getting ready to go out – that kind of classy, ‘adult’ essence that seems so amazing when you’re a kid! I hope that she likes it as much as I do!
I’m really pleased with the fragrances I chose from Fragrance Direct for my Christmas gifting this year, it’s definitely one of my go-to sites when it comes to perfume, just because it literally has everything and you’re more than likely to get it at a great price! The Chloe Eau de Parfum is currently £48.99 for 50ml and the Calvin Klein Obsessed is £41.95. Both have a good saving on the retail price, plus you can get an extra 10% off at the moment! If you want to browse more fragrances, you can have a look on the Gift Guide on-site here too for more ideas. So if you’ve still got some Christmas shopping to do, I definitely recommend checking it out!
